Tourism
Overview: ICON’s Tourism Program is focused on promoting and developing tourism in Ibanda District, with a particular emphasis on leveraging the region’s natural and cultural heritage. The program seeks to make Ibanda a key destination for both local and international tourists, while also contributing to the local economy through job creation and the development of tourism infrastructure.
Program Goals:
- To promote Ibanda District as a leading tourism destination in Uganda.
- To engage local communities in the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.
- To create awareness about the Equator Economy and the opportunities it presents for local businesses.
Key Initiatives:
- Great African Cycling Safari (GACS): Since 2022, ICON has partnered with the Great African Cycling Safari (GACS) to promote eco-tourism and community development through cycling. The cycling safari brings tourists to Ibanda’s equator sites and allows them to experience the natural beauty of the region.
- Equator Trek and Forest Initiative: ICON launched the Equinox Forest and Equator Trek in 2023. This initiative involves tree planting activities in churches, schools, and homes near the equator. The aim is to raise awareness about climate change and food security while also beautifying the region.
Impact:
- ICON’s tourism program has helped position Ibanda as a unique tourism destination, with special emphasis on its equator sites and community-driven eco-tourism activities.
- Local businesses and communities near the equator have benefited from increased tourist traffic and eco-tourism initiatives such as tree planting and environmental education.
